General Game Questions & Answers

1. What handheld devices do your games run on?

Our games run on all devices using the Palm OS. We also support most PocketPC devices; however, we do not support Handheld PCs. For a full list of the devices we support, please go to http://www.appforge.com/devices/.

2. Do you support older Handheld PCs such as the Jornada 728?

I am sorry, we do not support the older model Handheld PCs. We do support all models of PocketPC, however. The Handheld PC was a transitionary device that is not supported by most CE developers, including us and has not been sold for several years now. All we can suggest is that you consider upgrading to a newer device.

3. How do I download and install your games for my handheld?

You will need an Internet connection to do this. Your best bet is to follow the instructions on our web site that cover just this sort of question. Go to this location on your Internet browser:
http://www.dq.com/install.html#palm

4. I installed the bundle for my Mobile device but got an extra game?

My apologies for the confusion. The Mobile bundle download now includes all of our Mobile games, including Hearts, Spades, Euchre, and 500. If you dont want one of them, you can simply uninstall it (or try and buy it!). It is also possible to seperately download and install each game you want, but we dont offer every possible combination of install so you either get each game seperately or get all of them. The bundle installer basically just installs all of our games at one time, but they are each seperate purchases and can be uninstalled seperately if you dont want one of them.

5. Can I install your games or AppForge Booster into ROM or an external card??

Yes, please see the next question for details on how to install to your storage card.

6. How do I install and run your games from my memory expansion card or ROM?

Unfortunately, PDA memory cards (like floppy disks) were designed mostly to hold data, not applications. However, we have worked hard to make game and Booster installation to your storage card easier in the 5.08 and later releases of our games and it IS possible with a few extra steps listed below:

PALMOS: HOW TO MOVE DREAMQUEST GAMES TO PALM STORAGE CARD (CF, MEMSTICK or SD):

  1. You can install both our game and the required AppForge Booster PRC files to your storage card.
  2. NOTE TO SD CARD USERS: However, due to architectural limitations with Palm's SD card, you MUST install the AppForge Booster PRC files to your device's main memory. You can still install the games themselves to your SD card. CF cards on Handera devices and memory sticks on Sony dont have this limitation, so you can install the Booster PRC files as well the game PRC files directly to your storage card.
  3. There are two different ways you can install our games (and Booster) to your storage card:
    • If you use the default Install_Game.prc in the downloaded Zip file, it will install the game and 3 other (AppForge Booster) PRC files to your device's main memory. You can then transfer these PRC files to your storage card using the tools provided with your device.
    • -OR- Alternately, if you have no free main memory to use the default installer to extract the game PRC files, you can still install the Booster and game manually. To install manually, delete the Install_Game.prc if it is still on your device. On your PC, open the ManualInstall.zip file enclosed within the ZIP file you downloaded. Inside ManualInstall.zip, you will find four PRC files. Double-click the Championship_Game.prc (which is the game) and choose to install it directly to your storage card. Next, if you do not already have AppForge Booster (or any of our other games) installed, double-click the remaining 3 PRC files (which are the AppForge Booster) and install them to your preferred storage card or main memory (for SD cards).
POCKETPC: HOW TO MOVE DREAMQUEST GAMES TO STORAGE CARD (CF or SD):
  1. Place your PocketPC in its cradle to connect it to your desktop PC and verify Microsoft ActiveSync is running on your PC.
  2. Open the Install-Game-To-PocketPC.zip file that you downloaded onto your desktop PC by double-clicking it.
  3. Next, you will need to install the AppForge Booster by double-clicking the enclosed Install_Booster.exe file (inside the Zip file on your PC) if you do not already have it on your device. When prompted, install the Booster to the default location (it MUST be initially installed to the default location, more on this later).
  4. Next, double-click the Install_Game.exe file (inside the Zip file on your desktop PC) to have ActiveSync transfer the game to your PocketPC (you can choose to install it to your storage card if you wish by choosing not to install to the default location when prompted).
  5. If you have enough space for just the AppForge Booster on your main device memory and just wanted to put the games themselves on your storage card, you are done!
HOW TO MOVE APPFORGE BOOSTER TO POCKETPC STORAGE CARD (CF or SD):

This is more difficult and we only recommend it for experienced users since incorrect registry edits can result in data loss on your PocketPC. If you have and know how to use a registry editor, you can still manually move the AppForge Booster to your storage card by:

  1. Move your \Program Files\AppForge directory into the \Storage Card\Program Files folder on your storage card using the File Explorer on your device.
  2. Open the registry editor key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\AppForge
  3. Change the paths of pCOM and ROOTDIR to where you moved the Appforge files in Step #1, probably \Storage Card\Program Files\AppForge\pCOM.dll
  4. Now look at the Modules key under AppForge and change all entries under Modules to have the same new storage card path from Step #1.
  5. All of our games (and other programs) should now be able to find and use AppForge Booster directly from your storage card and work correctly.

7. I am getting Fatal Alert errors on my M100 or Palm III?

These older devices have a very limited heap size and, even though you may have enough free memory on the device to install the game, our full-featured game may sometimes exceed this heap size on your older device and generate these errors. Sadly, there is no fix for this other than to avoid online play and other features in the game. Consider upgrading to a newer Palm device and also benefit from a better screen and faster gameplay!

8. My game is not starting correctly, or is hanging at startup. What can I do?

If your game is not starting correctly, or seems to be hanging when you try to start it, there is a way to reset the game to its initial defaults. When the game starts up you will see a green startup screen. While the green startup screen is displayed, press or graffiti the letter 'r'. This will reset the game, and should solve any startup problems you're having. You do have to tap the letter R exactly when the prompt is visible.

9. My handheld/phone won't exit, gave a Fatal Exception, or locked up, what do I do?

You will need to use the 'Reset' button on your device. Typically there is a little pinhole on the back of your device labelled reset. Use a pin (or some styluses have a pin when you unscrew them) to press this reset button. It will reset your device (you will NOT lose your data/programs). There was a bug in our first release that prevented the game from exiting sometimes. Please get the latest release from our download page to fix this. If you have frequent problems with this, please email us for help.

10. Help! I am getting 'Kernel Exec' errors from the game on my Sony P800?

My apologies, we have had difficulty recreating this problem, but after much effort we believe we have recreated the problem and a fix for it. It turns out that AppForge has a serious memory leak and problem with the way it was saving our savegame information and statistics. While the problem is not 100% solved, we have worked around it by:

  1. Automatically transfering your registration information and statistics over and regenerating a clean version of your savegame upon upgrading.
  2. If the game does crash due to a Kern Exec error in the future, the game will automatically nuke your previous savegame (after transferring over your registration info and statistics) which should correct whatever corrupt savegame was causing the crash in the first place.
To fix this, you need to download and install the latest 5.11 release from our site at http://dq.com/download.html Please let us know if this fix works for you or not as any error as serious as this is our top priority.

11. My Mobile version locks up intermittently when its my turn to play?

Our apologies, this was a bug introduced in 4.92 that happened if you dragged your stylus during card play, resulting in an illegal (no) card being played. This could cause your turn/lead to be missed or even lockups of your device, requiring a reset. After much investigation, we believe we have found the problem and fixed it in the 4.97 and later releases. You can download the new version (you dont have to uninstall and there is no 'patch') from http://dq.com/download.html

12. My PocketPC version is 'stuck' dealing cards and I never get to play!?

This sometimes happens if the sound or image files cannot be found. Try toggling Sounds off temporarily to get out. Upgrading to the latest version should also fix this.

13. How do I exit your game on the PocketPC?

Microsoft Usability guidelines (which we had to follow to get Logo certification) required that the game go into the background and NOT exit when you press the (X) at the top-right of the game. They also required that we remove the 'Exit' from the game's File menu in 5.08. I personally prefer an 'Exit' as well, but please understand that we have to bow down to the greater powers if we want certification.

The latest 5.08 version uses almost no CPU or battery in the background so you can just leave it there until you are ready to play next time. The PocketPC will automatically exit it if it requires more memory. This is the way Microsoft intended all applications to work on a PocketPC to minimize load time...

However, if you REALLY want to exit the game (such as installing an upgrade, which requires you exit the game first), there are three methods:

  1. Type in the +Q keyboard shortcut and it will exit. We were allowed to keep this...
  2. Bring up your iTask Manager (usually a little arrow button on the bottom right of your device). Click and hold on our game name and choose 'Close Task'. This will force the game to exit.
  3. Power off and on your PocketPC device, reseting it. Obviously, this probably isnt the best choice, but if you are desperate...

14. When I run the game on my Sony Clie device, it only displays in the top left corner of the screen, or is very small, how can I fix this?

The Clie's 'Hi-Res Assist' feature does not work properly with our games. You must disable this feature for our games. You can do this by going into your preferences under 'High-Res support' and either disabling the Hi-Res assist feature entirely or by checking the name of our game in the list of applications presented.

15. Do you have a hi-res version of your games that uses the Sony Clie 320x320 enhanced screen size?

We do not currently have a version of our games that use this enhanced screen size. Since Sony has discontinued their hi-res SDK in favor of the newer PalmOS 5 standard, we will not be doing a release using the proprietary Sony hi-res mode. We will, however, be supporting the 320x320 enhanced screen resolution in a upcoming PalmOS 5 release. Sony has made a commmitment to support OS5 hi-res on the CLIE and will hopefully also provide a solution for older CLIE owners. Stay tuned for updates on this. Remember, upgrades are always free, so if you buy it now, when we do have a hi-res version available, you will get it for free!

16. Do you support the brand-new Palm OS5 running on ARM processors?

Not yet. We do run under Palm OS3 and 4. However, due to an AppForge, Palm, and Sony licensing issue, that is STILL not resolved, our games (and all applications written with AppForge) wont run under OS5. Sadly, Sony and Palm dont seem to be as excited about OS5 as some of us are and have so far not renewed their license for AppForge under OS5. This is what is preventing our games from running under OS5.

Originally, we had thought this would be resolved quickly with Palm, but now Palm appears to not be pursuing OS5 support very aggressively, leaving their customers with an empty promise of backward compatibility with OS3/4 applications such as ours. DreamQuest feels this is a critical mistake at a time when PocketPCs and Symbian devices are quickly growing in market share.

We urge you to write Palm and ask them to please renew their AppForge license so your favorite applications like ours will run under OS5. You can contact them at the following URLs to voice your support for AppForge on OS5:

http://www.palmsource.com/contact/write_os.html http://www.palm.com/support/contact/email_support.html

I apologize for the delay and the confusion with the new version of Palm OS. I appreciate your understanding as we await Palm to renew their license with AppForge so our games can run on this new operating system.

17. How can I disable the 'Hi-Res Assist' feature if I move your game to my memory stick?

There is a bug on the Clie in that the 'Hi-Res Assist' exclusion list does not look on the memory stick for applications, and therefore does not allow you to disable this feature for our games installed on the memory card. You must either install our game in main memory or disable the 'Hi-Res Assist' feature entirely when playing our game. We have reported this bug and hopefully Sony will fix it in the next OS release.

18. Why do the computer opponents always start with extra points?

This is correct behaviour. At the highest and lowest difficulty levels, Hearts, Spades and Euchre use a handicap to make the game extra tough for Master players by giving the computer a head start (or, in Beginner, you a head start).

If you do not want to play with a handicap, you can select the middle difficulty levels which will automatically turn off the handicap but still let you play with and against expert computer players.

Although at the highest level, the handicap may seem unfair, how often are you playing a hand over or undoing a play that you could not otherwise? If you disagree, you may find Challenger level is the most enjoyable difficulty for a strong, but even and fair game.

19. The gameplay is too slow, fast, jumpy, or uneven. Can I adjust it?

You can adjust the speed of gameplay using the options under the Options->General menu to suit your own tastes. Since these options only affect the delays and not the speed of your system, if you find the game speed starts getting uneven and choppy, you may wish to set the setting to a SLOWER, not faster, speed.

On many systems with the delays very short or disabled, this can result in uneven, choppy play. If it seems jumpy or uneven, try a slightly slower setting.

20. I never get a good deal! Is the computer cheating against me?

The game riffle shuffles the deck between 6-12 times (random) which guarantees a random deal. This method is preferred by card players and is used in most Bridge tournaments. It is possible to get several 'bad' hands in a row, just as in real life! I assure you the game does not 'cheat' or somehow stack the deck against you. I have tested and re-tested the game to verify the deals are solid so hang in there, your 'luck' will change!

21. The computer makes poor plays, why does it play so stupidly?

First, make sure you are running the latest version of the game. We are constantly improving the computer's strategy based on player feedback. You can always upgrade for free to the latest release, see our Download Instructions.

Next, make sure you are playing against expert computer players. You can quickly set all players and game options to a more challenging difficulty level by selecting Challenger from the Difficulty menu. Beginner players (notably Merlin and Junior) will make poor bids and plays fairly often. Average players (notably MsPotts, Ricky, and ProfPlum) usually play well but don't always bid or play an awkward hand correctly. They also don't know about signalling, finessing, aggressively setting, preventing moonshots, and other advanced techniques that expert players (LadyLuck, Sparky, and Red) do.

Finally, do not forget that the current game situation (score, other people's plays, etc.) can also affect a player's bid (Spades) or play strategy at an expert level. For example, a sly Spades expert may choose to bid low in the end game and dump in an effort to overbag the opponents and survive to another hand.

If you are already playing against expert players, and the computer still seems to be making poor bids (Spades) or plays, please see 'How do I report a bug or bad play if I see one?' for details.

I believe the current release now offers the most competitive Spades and Hearts game available. I have received feedback from many users like yourself that have helped make the game what it is today. Please help improve the game even more by providing feedback with sample hands I can use. I welcome your helpful comments, especially with hands that I can reproduce. One benefit of our software is that you can be assured that we keep updating it, providing an even stronger challenge with each release.

22. How do I report a bug or a bad play if I see one?

  1. When you see a bad play, exit the game before starting a new hand.
  2. On PalmOS, perform a HotSync to transfer your savegame memo over to your PC (this will happen on any normal HotSync). Then bring up the Palm Desktop application that was installed on your PC and click on the Memo button to see all the Memos stored on your Palm. Click on the 'Championship GAME saved hand' memo to select it and then right-click and choose Copy. This will copy the contents of that memo to your system clipboard.
  3. Paste the contents of that memo into an email and send it to us at the correct email address for the product..
It will allow us to recreate the exact game settings, deal, plays, etc. and we can even load this hand into our Windows game.

Alternately, you can also use the '=' key to show the deal seed for the hand. That combined with the dealer and a COMPLETE description of the settings and the round # that the bad play happened on and we should be able to manually recreate the hand as well.

23. Can I link to or distribute these games on our site or CD?

25. What games will DreamQuest be coming out with next? Can I suggest one?

Absolutely! We love to get feedback from our customers on what games they would like to see created next. Euchre, 500, and Cribbage were a response to dozens of emails from fans who wanted to see a Championship version of their favorite game.

If you would like to suggest a game, such as Championship Rook, Bid Whist, Pinochle, Sheepshead, or something else, please send us a detailed email with the rules and variations you like to play with. Knowing how everyone plays and the rules and options they like is the biggest step that you can help us with! Thanks!

You should also consider signing up for Beta testing, if you have not already. For more information, on becoming a beta tester, see http://dq.com/beta.html

26. I just upgraded my Mobile game and cant find a 'patch' to download and/or I am getting errors about not having the right version of Booster or that 'AFCore' is missing. How do I fix this and upgrade my game?

The latest registered AppForge Booster is provided with the game free of charge. Depending on how you upgraded and responded to the installer prompts, its possible to get the game and AppForge Booster out-of-sync.

The best solution to this is to uninstall BOTH our game and the AppForge Booster from your device (under Settings->System->Add/Remove Programs on a PocketPC and under the 'Home' and then 'Menu' keys under PalmOS). After cleaning off your device, you can then download and reinstall the latest version from our site at http://dq.com/download.html You may need to re-enter your unlock code. If you dont still have your code email, use our Lookup Form at http://dq.com/lookup.html.

Multiplayer Questions and Answers

1. How do I play online?

First, you will need some type of TCP/IP connection. We do not currently support IR play. You can play via an external modem, cell phone, 802.11b card, bluetooth, LAN, or any other standard Internet connetion. This includes cell phones with PalmOS such as the Kyocera PDQ Smartphone and Samsung's i300 Palm phone.

Simply choose 'Play Online' from the game's 'Multi' menu and it should initiate a connection. It will then show you a list of online games to join. Click JOIN on any table to connect and start playing.

2. Do you support Bluetooth for wireless gaming?

Yes and no. Our games only work over a TCP/IP Internet connection. This connection can be over Bluetooth. This means if you have TCP/IP installed running using Bluetooth, you can play any of our games online. However, if you want to connect two devices using Bluetooth that are not running TCP/IP, you cannot make a direct connection between them to play in the current versions of our games without TCP/IP. We are exploring adding support for native Bluetooth in a future release.

3. Will you ever allow mobile devices to host (not just join) online games?

Probably not. We now have a proxy relay server now that can host games on behalf of other systems. But, still, our games are already pushing the limits of what is possible on a mobile device. We just dont see them being able to handle hosting 3+ (with watchers) other players and the network traffic that it would also mean since most folks have a slow mobile connection. It would also mean making our games even bigger to add hosting capabilities.

In peer-to-peer games, you always want the host to have the fastest system and the most stable and fastest Internet connection possible for everyone in that game's enjoyment. Since a mobile device is unlikely to meet these criteria, it just doesnt make sense to have it host when we offer full cross-platform play between devices. Better for us to focus our energy on building our site and player base so there are more games to join for all devices.

We feel as our site grows and Internet access becomes ubiquitous on mobile devices, that this will become less and less of a problem and you will be able to always find a game to join while on the road or at home.

4. I cannot host games, but I can join them.

Our Palm/PocketPC games do not have the ability to host games.

5. Chatting is hard on a handheld! Can I create macros?

Essentially, a Chat Macro is an abbreviated message, used to send a longer chat message. As an example, if you have a Macro set up for '/s' that will send the message 'How are you?', you would use it by typing 's' when you select 'Send Macro'. The text 'How are you?' would be automatically chatted. For handheld devices, Chat Macros make sending more complex messages much easier without a keyboard.

On the Palm these Macros are stored in a 'Memo', which the user creates and modifies. On the PocketPC the Macros are stored in a 'Note'.

To create a Chat Macro you will need to make a new 'Memo'(Palm), or 'Note'(PocketPC) If you are using a PocketPC, the 'Note' will have to be either under 'My Documents', or 'All Folders', otherwise, the Macros will not work.

On the first line of the file you must enter 'DreamQuest Macros', followed by two carriage returns. If you don't have two carriage returns, then the macros won't work correctly on a Palm device. The next line is where you enter your Chat Macro. The first thing entered is the actual Macro abbreviation you wish to use, eg. '/s'. Start by typing a '/', followed by one or more characters and a colon, eg. '/ha:. There is no space between the colon and the last character of your Macro abbreviation. After the colon enter a space (this is required), then enter the text of the message you want associated with the abbreviation you previously entered, eg. '/ha: Hello all!'. Finally, you must enter a carriage return (same as hitting enter on a keyboard), or the Macro will not work properly. An example of a simple Macro 'Memo' or 'Note' is:

DreamQuest Macros

/s: How are you?
/ha: Hello all

You can enter as many Macros as you like, just be sure to use a carriage return at the end of each one. When you are done creating your Macros you can use them by tapping on the 'Mulit' menu in the game, and selecting 'Send Macro'. When the prompt to enter a Macro comes up, enter one of the abbreviations you have created, eg. 's'. The associated message will then be chatted to the other players.

Euchre Questions and Answers

1. What are all the general and game options, and what do they mean?

General options

  • Delay between plays - Sets how quickly the game play moves.
  • Allow practice options - Change this to 'No' if you want all Practice options to be disabled (so you can avoid the temptation). Change this to 'Yes' to use all Practice options (undo, hint, redeal, replay, and view history).
  • Coach to suggest hints - Change this to the computer personality name that you wish to provide you hints for passing and playing. If you are a more recreational player, you should probably choose a strong intermediate player like ProfPlum, as an expert player (Red, LadyLuck, and Sparky) may suggest passes and plays that may confuse you.
  • View highest cards on - Change this if you wish to have the highest cards sorted on the right or left side of your hand. This also changes the number sort order from low to high instead.
  • Autoplay last card - Change this to 'In hand' if you want the game to automatically play the last card in your hand. Change this to 'In suit' if you want the game to automatically play your only card in a suit if it is led. Since you have no choice in what to play this can save you some clicking.
  • Combine partner tricks - Setting this option to 'Yes' (default for 'partner' play) combines tricks won by either partner on the trick card at the bottom right position of the screen. If set to 'No', each player's tricks are shown seperately. This option will change to 'No' if the main game variation is set to 'Cutthroat' or 'Bid' since all players are scored seperately in these cases.
  • Concede guaranteed - Set this to 'Yes' to concede tricks that are guaranteed winners by the current leader (Best Bower, etc).
Game options
  • Game variation - Choose your preference for the main Euchre game variation as described below.
    • Partner: Players at opposite sides of the table play as a team, bidding on whether or not they can win the majority of tricks. This is the default variation.
    • Cutthroat: Players are scored individually with variations to how a win or a euchre are scored.
    • Bid: Players play as a team as in regular Euchre with all cards having regular Euchre ranks. Each player has the opportunity to bid on both the suit they would like trump to be and the number of tricks they think they can take. The minimum bid is one trick (or the player may pass). If another player wishes to bid, he or she must bid a higher number of tricks than the current highest bid. The highest bid possible is a go alone bid in which the bidder must win all tricks for the hand while his or her partner sits out for the current hand. Note that in Bid Euchre, the high bidder always leads the first trick, regardless of who dealt.
  • British (use joker) - If this is set to 'Yes', one joker is added to the deck. It becomes the highest ranking card of the trump suit and is refered to as the Best Bower or Benny. If the joker is dealt as the upcard, it proposes Spades as the trump suit. This option is defaulted to 'No'.
  • Cards in deck - Use this option to choose how many cards are in the deck and how many are dealt in each hand.
    • 24: The default deck with ranks 2 through 8 of all suits removed from a standard 52-card deck. In Bid, this option deals out 6, otherwise it deals out 5 cards to each player.
    • 28: The 8's are added to a 24-card deck. In Bid, this option deals out 7, otherwise it deals out 5 cards to each player. 28, Deal 6: The 8's are added to a 24-card deck. In Bid, this option deals out 7, otherwise it deals out 6 cards to each player.
    • 32: The 7's are added to a 28-card deck. In Bid, this option deals out 8, otherwise it deals out 5 cards to each player.
    • 32, Deal 6: The 7's are added to a 28-card deck. In Bid, this option deals out 8, otherwise it deals out 6 cards to each player.
    • 32, Deal 7: The 7's are added to a 28-card deck. In Bid, this option deals out 8, otherwise it deals out 7 cards to each player.
    • 32 Double: The Aces, Kings, Queens, and Jacks of two decks of cards are combined and dealt. When playing double-deck games, in the event of a tie, the first player to play the rank wins the trick. Double decks usually played in Bid (although you can play non-Bid if you like) and all cards are then dealt out (8 each).
    • 40 Double: The Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Tens of two decks of cards are combined and dealt. When playing double-deck games, in the event of a tie, the first player to play the rank wins the trick. Double decks usually played in Bid (although you can play non-Bid if you like) and all cards are then dealt out (10 each).
    • 48 Double: The Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens, and Nines of two decks of cards are combined and dealt. When playing double-deck games, in the event of a tie, the first player to play the rank wins the trick. Double decks are only available in Bid and all cards are then dealt out (12 each).
  • Re-deal options - Choosing one or both of these options allow a player to call for a redeal.
    • Ace-No-Face: A player is dealt a hand that contains only one ace and no face cards.
    • Farmer's Hand: A player is dealt a hand that contains no face cards or aces. The default setting for this option is None.
  • Dealing options - Choosing 'Screw the dealer' forces the dealer to bid during second round bidding. The dealer is not allowed to pass on the second round. Choosing 'Call for Best' allows the 'alone' player's partner to pass their best card to the alone player. Passing happens BEFORE taking the upcard. So, if the player passing happens to also be the dealer, they CANNOT pass the upcard to their alone partner. This option defaults to 'None'.
  • Allow NT bidding - Change this to 'No' if you don't want to play with 'No Trump' (NT) bids during the second round of bidding. No Trump means there is no trump or bowers and the highest card in the led suit always wins the trick (Aces highest, then Kings, and so on).
  • End Game Score - Set this to the game ending score. The default for this option is 10.

2. Why did the game end after we reached 10 points?

The official Euchre rules from Hoyle state that games will be played until one team or player reaches 10. However, the winner must always 'win by 2'. This means that if the game is 10 to 9, the game will continue on until the winner wins by 2 (much like tennis or volleyball scoring). This means the game could go on indefinetely if each team keeps alternating 1-point victories!

You can also set the endgame scoring amount to a value other than 10 under the 'End Game Score' selection on the game's Options menu. We currently don't offer an option to disable the 'win by 2' rule, but we are considering adding this in a future release.

3. I took all tricks when the opponents bid, why didn't I get 2 points for both euchring and marching?

The official Euchre rules from Hoyle (and several other sources) state that euchrers only get a 1 point for Euchring, even if they take all the tricks. We are considering adding a scoring option for this in a future release.

However, if this happens, most likely the computer (or a human player) never should have bid in the first place. Please send us a bug report so we can correct the computer error in bidding. See our FAQ section for details on how to send us a bug report.

4. The computer never should have bid on a hand!

It is possible the computer did misbid, but sometimes the computer is actually quite crafty about bidding hands that many people would not. For example, the computer will 'Assist' if partner is getting an upcard and they have 2 trump in their hand plus an Ace. This is a bit of a gamble, but with an Ace virtually guaranteed, at least 1 trump, and partner getting the upcard, it is worth trying.

If you do see a hand that you still believe the computer misbid, please see our FAQ section for details on how to send us a bug report.

4. I have questions about Euchre, where can I find the complete rules to play?

For tips on improving your play, see our own euchretips.html. For details on rules and variations, either see our included Help file in the PC-Windows game or visit www.pagat.com.

Registering Questions

1. What is this Palm/PocketPC ID and why do you need it?

We use this ID/name to assign a unique unlock key for your software purchase. The ID used is slightly different depending on if you have a PalmOS or PocketPC device:

Universal way to get ID: Works on both Palm and PocketPC devices

After installing one of our games, choose 'Unlock...' from the game's Help menu. You will be prompted to enter the key for. The name shown after the for and before the colon is your HotSync/Owner ID that you should give us when registering. For example, if it says 'Key for John Doe:', then your HotSync/OwnerID to give us is 'John Doe'.

Palm HotSync ID: Required for all PalmOS devices (including IBM And Handspring models)

HotSync® ID is a user designated identifier for a Palm OS® device. It is the unique name you assigned to your device when you first set it up, and is used by the synchronization software and other applications to identify the device. You can find it by tapping the HotSync icon on your device and looking in the upper right hand corner. (For instance, many times, your name is your HotSync ID.)

Pocket PC Owner ID: Required for iPAQ and HP Jornada Windows CE devices

The Pocket PC Owner Name is the name that appears in the "Owner" field on your Pocket PC's Today screen. The Pocket PC Owner Name is usually the name of the primary user of the Pocket PC. The Pocket PC Owner Name can also be found by looking at the Owner Information under Settings. If you do not have an Owner Name currently entered into your Pocket PC, then you will need to create one at this time. As you complete your purchase of our software, be sure to enter the Pocket PC Owner Name on the Handango order page exactly as it appears on your Pocket PC. NOTE: Owner name is not the same as device name.

2. How do I enter my key? Your game is not accepting my unlock code?

There are really only two possibilities for why your code is not working:

1) The Hotsync or Owner ID you gave us do not match EXACTLY to your device.

  • Case, spaces, middle initials, periods, and capitalization all matter.
  • To figure out your ID, bring up the game on your handheld and under the Help menu, select 'Unlock...', it will then show your OwnerID/ HotsyncID in the prompt, e.g. 'Key for John A. Doe:' means that your ID is 'John A. Doe'.
  • You can also follow the instructions found here: http://dq.com/palmid.html
If the ID we have is incorrect, please do a lookup to correct it and we will resend you an updated unlock key: http://dq.com/lookup.html

OR

2) The code you have does not match the version you downloaded. The 12-digit code you were sent will only work in correct game. If the 2nd character is an H, it is a Hearts code, S is for Championship Spades, and E is for Euchre. It will work in either the Palm or PocketPC versions, but not the PC (Windows) versions. Did you order the correct game?

3. I cannot enter the code numbers on my Treo Palm phone?

On the Treo keyboard, you need to press the solid blue button in the lower left of your Treo keyboard TWICE in a row (acts like a 'NumLock' key) and you can then enter numbers and not letters. Click it again to return to alpha entry.

4. My key won't work in this version!

The registered and trial versions are the same. You just need to enter your key to unlock the game. Once you have downloaded and installed the game, play it. When in the game, choose 'Unlock' from the Help menu and enter your key exactly as it appears in your registration letter.

After entering your unlock code, you should see the 'Demo' in the upper left corner of the table go away. All nags should also now be removed and your version is now fully registered. It is important to enter your code EXACTLY as it appears in your letter. It is also important that your HotSync ID or Owner name exactly match what you see in our registration letter.

If the game has expired and locked you out, you should still be able to enter you unlock code. There is a bug in the 4.0 release that prevents entry. The only workaround is to uninstall and reinstall the latest version.

5. It says I'm not registered but I am! How do I replace my key?

Sometimes upgrading, recovering, or modifying your system can lose your game registration information. It will then revert back to the demo state and will nag you or perhaps even prevent you from playing. If you have your code printed out, or the email filed away somewhere, just select 'Unlock' from the Help menu and re-enter your code to re-register the game.

If you don't have your code or email anymore, use our Lost Code Lookup and we will send you a replacement registration packet with your unlock code and download information for the latest release, free of charge.

Remember, upgrades of the same game are always free for those that have supported us. Simply send us your name, email, and approximate date and we will be happy to look you up and send you a replacement key. Thanks for your support!

6. What is shareware? I already paid, why do I have to pay again?

I am sorry if you were misled or misunderstood what shareware is. Let me explain a bit more:

Shareware is a marketing method, not a type of software. Unlike software marketed through normal retail channels, where you are forced to pay for the product before you've even seen it, the shareware marketing method lets you try the program for a period of time before you buy it. Since you've tried a shareware program, you know whether it will meet your needs before you pay for it. Shareware programs are just like programs you find in major stores, catalogs, and other places where people purchase software - except you get to use them, on your own computer, before paying for them.

Consumers who purchase shareware programs receive a level of product support that exceeds what traditional software manufacturers deliver. Shareware users who need support often speak directly to the actual developer of the program, who is intimately familiar with how it operates and therefore can provide excellent technical support. Shareware authors often fix bugs in programs and add features quickly, based on feedback from users.

Shareware VENDORS distribute shareware versions of programs, charging a small fee for the costs of disk duplication and advertising, plus a small profit. Most shareware AUTHORS allow this type of distribution so you'll have a chance to try their programs. However, NONE of the money paid to a shareware VENDOR goes to the AUTHOR. If you try a shareware program, then continue to use it after the trial period, you must pay for and register the program. The same principal applies if you buy a shareware disk at a computer show or find a shareware program on a CD-ROM disc or at a store.

Unfortunately, I do know that some disreputable VENDORS fail to explain what shareware is or mislead the purchaser into thinking they are BUYING "100 Windows 95 Games" for $19 or less, which is a direct violation of the distribution license for the game. I do apologize if you were misled, but I have no control over what these people do. Anyone can download our programs, slap them onto a disk and claim to 'sell' it. PLEASE, if you would be kind enough to send me the name of the company (preferably, with an address), I will report them to the Assoc. of Shareware Professionals (ASP) who try to prevent the confusion and anger that these vendors can cause.

I hope you will find shareware and the idea of 'trying before you buy' a great idea and will support my product and the many other quality programs available.

7. I registered several days ago and still have not received a key!

You can confirm your order status directly with the author at any time by emailing us. We do send out keys within 24 hours of receiving your order.

IF YOU REGISTERED VIA THE INTERNET, did you provide the billing address and bank name to DigiBuy's ordering service? They are trying to protect you, the cardholder, and thoroughly check that a card is valid before processing a charge. Unfortunately, they often just ignore orders that are missing information. You will need to re-register via the Web site or by sending a check. Both DigiBuy and DreamQuest check for duplicates so do not let that concern worry you. Again, keys usually go out within 24 hours after your order.

IF YOU REGISTERED BY CHECK, when did you send it? US Mail takes at least a week, sometimes even more. Keep in mind that US Mail can be slow around some holidays. Did you send it from overseas without sending it via airmail? Sorry, I cannot control the Post Office. I do send the key out within 24 hours of receiving a check. If it has been over two weeks since you mailed the check, please contact the author or re-register. I do check for duplicates.

8. I don't have a credit card, can I still order your game, and register, some other way?

You CAN register via check, postal order, or money order for $19.95 US. If you really a CD (not just the unlock code emailed to you), please enclose an additional $9 to cover disks and shipping.

*PLEASE* include a printed copy of the order form from the help file or the order.txt file with your name, address, phone, EMAIL, and which game you are ordering CLEARLY PRINTED. Mail check and info to:

Christopher Williamson
DreamQuest Software
542 West Linden Street Louisville, CO 80027-3124
USA

You can also do a bank transfer (mostly for European customers), by using the link off http://dq.com/order.html. If none of these methods are convenient, please email us at orders@dq.com and we will try our best to accomodate another method of payment for you.

P.S. If you are sending from overseas, make sure to send it via Air Mail or it may take months to get here.

9. Is it safe to use a credit card? Why do you ask for bank name?

We use DigiBuy (owned by Digital River), a well-established distributor for over 15 years to process our credit card orders. They have a secure, encrypted web site (you will see a little lock or key in the bottom-left of your browser) which prevents hackers from stealing your credit card number. They do NOT forward this card number to anyone else (even to us, the game authors).

DigiBuy asks for your address and bank FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION. They want to be sure that the credit card belongs to you. They verify your mailing address and bank issuer to be sure they match the card number provided.

We have never had any incidents from over 5,000+ registered users nor have I personally had any problems using my card to order hundreds of products via the Internet from secure Web sites.

10. Can I get a free copy? Do you offer any kind of hardship discount?

I am sorry, but we cannot afford to give away registrations for our Championship-level card games. The handheld versions are already as discounted as we can make them at $19.95 so I am sorry that there is no additional discount for current customers and promotions as we have for our Windows games.

We have put THOUSANDS of hours into these mature games and are finding it difficult to justify the time and money spent to improve the game and, in particular, to support network multi-player gaming. We are not financed by any large gaming company, and we do not plaster our Web pages with banner ads, and are not sponsored by anyone other than our happy registered users.

However, there is a 'Buy 2, get 1 game free' special that you can use to get the 3-game for the price of 2 games for the handheld. Go to http://dq.com/order/p3.html

11. I already registered and now see a lower price, can I get a refund?

We occasionally offer upgrades or special price offers that are available for a limited time. If you have already registered normally, you can only use these offers to purchase additional licenses or to purchase a different game.

We apologize, but since our bank has already taken the charges out for the credit card order you already placed, we cannot refund you the difference without taking a loss on both the original charge and refund. As a small company, it is hard for us to absorb these charges on returns. However, we do stand behind our products and if you still feel you were misled or are otherwise unhappy with your game, please email us and we will do our best to help.

12. How do I order this game for a friend or family member other than myself?

If ordering online, simply enter their name and address in the shipping address field and your name and address in the billing information fields. The billing address must match your credit card billing address or VISA/etc. will not accept the charge.

Make sure to include THEIR email address in the registration so the packet will go to them. You may also want to pay $9 extra and have a CD-ROM of all our games sent to them. Our CD comes in a colorful case with professional color printing along with their unlock key(s) and may be useful if you want something you can wrap as a gift.

Alternately, if you forget this, email us immediately after you order at orders@dq.com and we can change the email/name/address on your order to make sure your recipient gets their gift with a note that it came from you.
